Long term planning
For Evony there are a few things you need to consider before you set your first building:
1. Intent of city:
Early research - an early research city takes advantage of a surplus of gold to speed your scientific advancement. You need to have a TH2, and Academy in this town at the minimum. You will also want a RP2 to move resources to your main city when you abandon this city. Finally an Inn and FH2. This city should be built in conjuction with NPC farms so choose a Flat level that will reward you with a farmable NPC when you are done.
Barracks - a barracks city supplies troops to your war machine. This is generally not your main city since you will be sacrificing many of the buildings you need in a Capital city. Minimum TH2, Academy, 6Cottages, Beacon Tower, RP, FH2, and as many barracks as you can shove into it. A good idea is to put it 1 mi from a capital city, so you can use the capital city's relief point.
Forward Attack - A forward attack base is built 1-3mi from a large opponent. These can be captured from another player during a prolonged wartime situation or as a bold first attack against a fortified adversary. As a minimum, you should plan to build TH2, Academy, Inn, FH2+, RP6+. So make sure you have a resupply and defense plan in place.
NPC - A city built to become an NPC is the simplest of all. It is meant to be farmed at some point in the game, so the most important consideration is the level of the flat you take.
2. Term of occupation: The term of occupation is directly related to your city intent (from 1 above). But, it is important that you have some idea of how long you plan to stay in the city you are building so you can decide whether you want to build walls and fortifications if you plan to stay.
3. Supply lines: It is quite feasible to build a city 300-400mi from your main base. Especially when building Forward Attack cities, this insulates your Capital from counter-attack. The question is how to resupply the base you build. Keep this in mind and begin upgrading your relief station as soon as you can, if you plan to be aggressive. You should also keep in mind your allied neighbors as you build these aggressive cites, they are often available to send some much needed supplies to upgrade your FA cities..
